Top banks in Bangladesh
· Ranking
Which bank is the biggest depends on what you measure. Here are the leaders in each part of Bangladesh's banking system, with the numbers that can be checked.
How to read this list
There is no single official ranking of Bangladeshi banks. Bangladesh Bank, the central bank, publishes deposits and loans by group of banks; the stock exchange shows the market value of listed banks; each bank publishes its own annual report. So rather than invent one league table, we show the leaders of each group and say where each fact comes from.
The state-owned banks
The four big state-owned commercial banks were all set up in 1972, soon after independence, and have the widest branch networks in the country, reaching most upazilas:
- Sonali Bank, headquartered in Motijheel, Dhaka
- Janata Bank
- Agrani Bank
- Rupali Bank, the only one of the four listed on the DSE (RUPALIBANK)
Islami Bank and the Islamic banks
Shariah-based banks held 24.38 percent of all bank deposits in Bangladesh at the end of December 2025, according to Bangladesh Bank data reported by The Daily Star. The largest by far is Islami Bank Bangladesh, founded in 1983, with 37.44 percent of the deposits of the full-fledged Islamic banks. Next come Al-Arafah Islami Bank with 10.41 percent and First Security Islami Bank with 7.94 percent.
The big private banks
- BRAC Bank (2001) is the most valuable bank on the Dhaka Stock Exchange, at about USD 1.23 billion in July 2026 (The Daily Star), and owns the mobile financial service bKash.
- Dutch-Bangla Bank (1996) runs one of the country's largest ATM networks and the Rocket mobile financial service.
- City Bank (1983) is known for its card business.
- Eastern Bank (1992) serves corporate, retail and SME customers.
- Pubali Bank, with roots in 1959, is one of the oldest private banks, with around 500 branches.
- United Commercial Bank (1983) and Prime Bank (1995) are among the other large listed private banks.
Foreign banks
Standard Chartered opened its first branch in Chattogram in 1948 and is the largest foreign bank in the country; HSBC opened in Dhaka in 1996. Neither is listed in Bangladesh. The Daily Star noted in July 2026 that each could be worth more than Tk 10,000 crore if they were.
