How SEO works
· Guide
Search engine optimisation sounds technical, but the idea is simple: help search engines find your pages, understand them and trust them, so they show you to people looking for what you offer.
Why it matters
Most people looking for a school, a hospital, a supplier or a software firm in Bangladesh start with a search, usually on a phone, in English or Bangla. Few look past the first page of results. If your business is not there, for most of them it does not exist.
Step 1: crawling
Search engines run programs called crawlers (Google's is Googlebot) that follow links from page to page and download what they find. A page nobody links to is hard to discover. A sitemap, a file that lists your pages, helps crawlers find everything, and so do links from sites they already visit often.
Step 2: indexing
Next, the search engine works out what each page is about and stores it in its index. Clear titles and headings help, and so does text written in the page itself rather than only inside pictures. If you have English and Bangla versions, keep each on its own address and connect them with hreflang tags, so the right one is shown to the right reader. Thin, copied or blocked pages are often left out.
Step 3: ranking
When someone searches, the engine picks the most useful pages from its index. Google uses many signals, but they come down to a few questions:
- Does the page really answer what was searched?
- Can the site be trusted? Do other reputable sites mention or link to it?
- Is it fast and easy to use on a phone?
- For local searches like “hospital near me”, is the business's name, address and phone the same everywhere it appears?
What actually helps a small business
- Describe what you do in the plain words customers search for, in English and in Bangla.
- Show your name, address, phone and opening hours on your website, written the same way everywhere.
- Create a free Google Business Profile so you appear on Google Maps.
- Get listed in trustworthy directories and your trade association. Each one is another confirmation that you are real.
- Make sure your site loads quickly and reads well on a phone.
- Add structured data (schema.org) so search engines know your name, logo and address for certain.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and answer them.
- Be patient: new pages can take days or weeks to be crawled and ranked.
What to avoid
Buying links, copying other sites' text, stuffing pages with keywords and pages that promise what they do not deliver. Search engines are good at spotting these, and they can push a site down instead of up. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a “number one ranking on Google”: nobody outside Google controls its results.
Where BDLUC fits
A BDLUC listing does several of these things for you at once: a page with its own title and description, schema.org structured data, English and Bangla versions with hreflang, a place in the sitemap, a share card for social media, and your name, address and links written consistently. Read how listing brings more traffic, or list your company for free.
